What is Bruxism?

Wake up with sore jaw muscles and a headache can be a sign of those who suffer from Bruxism, a strong grinding or clenching of teeth. Bruxism can weaken teeth, wearing them and even let them go.

What is the bite plate?

The bite plate or occlusal splint, is an acrylic appliance placed on the teeth to prevent tooth wear due to the habit of squeezing and grinding teeth.

Why is it important to treat Bruxism?

The frequency and severity of bruxism are often associated with emotional and physical stress. When night, bruxism involves rhythmic movements similar to those of chewing, with long periods of contraction of the jaw muscles, may be the cause of muscle pain and fatigue. An incorrect alignment of teeth and improper closing of the mouth usually present in most cases. Bruxism can strike anyone, having no direct relation to age. Therefore, it is essential that the carrier person of any type of bruxism must constantly visit your dentist to avoid further damage.

These are the main benefits when treating Bruxism:

  • Protect teeth from get worn out;
  • Relieve the temporomandibular joints (located in front of the ears) against excessive forces that form by no relaxation of bite;
  • Induce relaxation of the muscles.

What are the procedures performed to treat bruxism?

A mold of the teeth is made and, aacrylic or silicone plate is fabricate on lab.

What happens if I do not treat bruxism?

The enamel is the first to receive bruxism damage, thus causing abnormal wear of the teeth and may extend to the gums, causing pain. In fragile teeth, either decayed or treated, the friction can cause breakage and cracks. The tension headaches are common in patients with bruxism. They arise by excessive contraction of the muscles of mastication, reaching the face, neck, ear and even shoulders. The critical period is the morning (if the predominant contraction at night) or late (if overpower day).

Another problem resulting from bruxism is pain in the temporomandibular joint. This may also suffer crackles, lock, restrict the opening of the mouth and off to the side when opening and closing.

Pain is an unpleasant experience that may motivate the individual much more than any other experience in life. Orofacial pain, as the name suggests, they are those related to the structures that surround the mouth and face. They go from the known toothache to aggressive and painful disorders of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).

The ATM is located just in front of the ear and participates in the movement of the mandible (lower jaw), working as a “hinge” in the opening and closing of the mouth. The most common indicative of a change in the ATM is the presence of a crack (click) during movement of the jaw.

Depending on the situation, this flick is accompanied by pain, which often manifests itself in the ear region. In other cases, sputtering can occur, that is, a noise like that of a “dry tree being kneaded sheet”, which triggers a painful sensation, usually in the act of chewing food.
